How to throw a birthday bash on a budget

Birthdays are joyful milestones to celebrate, but they can also be a major source of overspending and financial worry.

Splashing the cash doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s more fun to be had. In fact, there are lots of ways you can throw a great party without breaking the bank.

Once you get out of the mindset of money equals quality, you’ll find you can create a birthday party worth remembering for only a few pounds!

Here’s some of our low budget cheap inexpensive birthday party ideas.

The Invites

You don’t need to buy expensive, pre-printed stationery when pretty much everyone has access to the internet. With a quick search online for ‘free birthday invite templates’ you’ll find tons of templates to download.

Simply edit and email them out. Or print and customise/personalise as you need. Voila!

The Decorations

Set yourself a small decorating budget and head to your local Pound Store where you’ll find an abundance of cheap decorations. From disposable cups to glow sticks and banners – you’ll be amazed at what you can pick up for next to nothing.

Get creative with balloons, they can make a huge impact and are relatively cheap to buy. Use your imagination and attempt a balloon garland, balloon bouquets, write messages on them, transform yellow balloons to look like bumble bees, or if they’re clear balloons, fill them with confetti! The options are endless.

The Catering

A Potluck Party can work well for adult parties where you decide amongst yourself what each one of you can cook and bring to the table. Jazz it up a little and ask each person to represent a certain cuisine or country.

Another option is to host a competition. Divide into teams and work your baking or cooking skills to be crowned ‘MasterChef’ for a small prize. A simple but fun party idea with very little expenditure!

In terms of drinks, for adult parties, it’s now common to have a BYOB ruling where people who want to have a drink can bring their own.

The Games

This one’s aimed at the kids. There are a whole host of fun, classic kids’ games that are ‘free’ to play, with a small prize offered to the winner of each, such as ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’ and ‘Pass the Parcel’.

But if you are looking for something new to try, here’s some of our tried and tested games for kids to make your party go off with a bang:

1. Post It Note Game

Best for older children, you’ll need a stack of sticky notes and a pen. Take it in turns and write the name of a famous person or character on a sticky note. Making sure that the player can’t see it, stick the note to their forehead. The aim of the game is for the player to guess who they are by asking questions for a yes/no answer from the other party goers. If they manage to guess, they win a small prize.

2. The Mummy

Ok so you’ll need a few loo rolls for this one, but the little ones love it! Break into groups of two or three. Each group gets a roll of toilet paper and picks one person to be the ‘mummy’. When the clock starts, all the teams must wrap their mummies using the whole roll of toilet paper. The fastest or most creative team wins!

3. Mr Freeze

Pick one person to be Mr Freeze. Have everyone playing the game move around the party as usual. When Mr Freeze freezes, everyone else must freeze too. Whoever freezes last is out! The last person remaining wins a prize. You can then choose a different Mr Freeze and repeat for the duration of the party.

The Cake

Finally, a party wouldn’t be a party without a cake, however buying a birthday cake can be extremely expensive. Obviously, if you have the baking skills of Mary Berry you can create your own, but let’s assume you don’t.

A good option is to buy a plain, cheap cake such as a Victoria sponge, and ‘pimp’ it. Use cream, sprinkles, chocolate, icing, sweets or whatever you may already have in your supplies to decorate and turn it into something special.
